Do you remember the first time you had to step on an escalator? It required a childlike leap of faith - you had to place your foot on the moving metal stair and at the same time grab hold of the moving handrail in a coordinated motion. If your timing was off you'd stumble and fall on the cold metal tread, or worse, get your shoelace caught in the moving stair as the escalator brought you to the top. It was a terrifying rite of passage. But it was necessary. For many young Sheboyganites the first elevator they rode was this one in the H. C. Prange department store on the corner of 8th and Wisconsin.
Now that was an escalator!
